A Portrait of a Cornish Hedge

17 November, 2026 - 23 January, 2027

The Chapel Gallery

A mixed media exhibition celebrating the quietly determined plants that survive and thrive in the traditional Cornish hedge.

Exhibition open: 17 November, 2026 - 23 January, 2027

A Portrait of a Cornish Hedge celebrates the quietly resilient plants that flourish within Cornwall’s traditional hedgerows, exploring what their biodiversity can teach us about coexistence and resilience. The images – astonishingly clear and technically precise – are the result of a passion project by documentary and portrait photographer, Gavan Goulder.

Gavan has always been drawn to telling stories through people and place; his work explores the art of looking closely, finding value in subjects that might otherwise go unnoticed. A Portrait of a Cornish Hedge represents a shift in Gavan’s practice, applying this approach to the natural world rather than the human one.

By isolating each specimen, I invite the viewer to look more closely at the quiet beauty and resilience of these often unnoticed plants. Like the people I have photographed throughout my career, each plant has its own presence, character, and story. In giving these plants the attention usually reserved for human portraiture, I hope to remind viewers that even the most familiar and overlooked parts of our landscape deserve to be seen, valued and protected.

Against the backdrop of the global biodiversity crisis and the accelerating loss of species driven by human activity, these portraits highlight nature’s capacity to adapt and regenerate. Inspired by biodiverse farming practices that restore soil health, the project draws parallels between ecological and human interdependence, showing how diversity fosters strength.

As I travelled through the Cornish landscape, I was struck by the resilience of the Cornish hedge. Whatever the weather – battered by wind, rain, or blazing sunshine – it continues to thrive and flourish. Its strength lies in its extraordinary biodiversity, with a rich variety of plants, insects, birds, and animals creating a balanced and enduring ecosystem.

Each wild plant, photographed in situ along West Cornwall’s lanes and carefully isolated against black velvet, becomes a portrait of survival and beauty. The final works, mounted and sealed with a layer of encaustic bees wax, invite viewers to reflect on the fragility and wisdom of the natural world thriving at the edges of our lives.

Cornwall-based ecologist and wild food expert, Caroline Davey of Fat Hen, has provided botanical labels for each of Gavan’s plant portraits.
