Winston’s Wordsmiths: A short story competition for young writers in Cornwall

Awards & Prizes |

As part of the Winston Graham Historical Prize, we’re inviting budding young writers to bring Cornish history alive with their vivid imaginations!

Winston’s Wordsmiths, the short story competition for 8-16yr olds, is open for entries once again. Scroll down for full criteria and a writing prompt to get you started!

The Inspiration

Winston Graham is most famous for the Poldark novels. Set in Cornwall and following the fortunes, tragedies, heartbreaks and triumphs of Ross, Demelza and co., this series of stories has sold millions of copies worldwide, and been dramatized for TV and radio several times.

Graham was a regular visitor to the museum and researched a lot of his material in the library, earning him high praise from critics for his historical accuracy. When he passed away he left a legacy to us to run a fiction prize in his name – you can find out more about the Winston Graham Historical Prize here.
