The search begins for the best new historical fiction

Awards & Prizes |

Each year, fans of historical fiction receive the ultimate gift; a tried-and-tested shortlist of the best new reads by contemporary authors, as they strive to reshape the way we see the past.

The Winston Graham Historical Prize is unusual in the literary world in that the shortlist is created by a large group of readers who whittle down many entries to just a handful of unmissable novels, all of which ignite the imagination with memorable characters and portrayals of a unique period in time.

The first step to creating the shortlist for 2026 was taken today, with the opening of entries to authors and publishers; entries close on 1st October.

Charlotte Hobson, Chair of the Judges, said of this year’s search: “Anyone with a historical novel out this year should feel encouraged to enter, be they a seasoned writer or a debut novelist. The Readers’ Committee approach means that we often uncover some real gems that have been otherwise overlooked.”

The Prize, which comes with a cheque for £3,000, is the result of a bequest left by Winston Graham himself to the museum.

Graham researched many of his books in our library, and the museum is charged with seeking out new voices in the genre which gave us the Cornwall-based Poldark series.

We’re extremely proud to oversee the prize, and it’s always exciting to see the submissions arriving. It reminds us of our connection with Winston Graham and other writers who have been inspired by the museum – home to over a million objects – over the years.

To enter, novels must have been published in the UK between 30 September 2024 and 30 September 2025, set at least sixty years ago in the UK and Ireland, and written by authors resident in the UK.

The shortlist will be shared in January – the perfect month for a deep dive into escapist fiction – and the ultimate winner will be announced during a ceremony at the museum in March.

Last year’s winner, Andrew Miller for The Land in Winter, said: “Winning the Winston Graham Historical Prize was a huge encouragement for me. I’m very grateful to have this accolade to my name, as Graham’s books were early favourites of mine.”

Authors and publishers interested in submitting entries for the Winston Graham Historical Prize can do so here.
