Cornwall’s inspiring Mineral Gallery in Truro

New for 2026, the museum here in Truro is pleased to launch a STEM workshop to inspire budding geologists and support the Year Three and Four Science Curriculum.

Developed with the help of sponsorship from Cornish Lithium and in consultation with ‘The Cornwall Geologist’, Dr Sam Hughes, the workshop includes handling of interesting specimens, a ‘geological treasure hunt’, and the chance to make mini fossils from clay.

In line with the National Curriculum, the workshop encourages children to learn in a hands-on way about the rock cycle and the three main types of rock, in the inspiring setting of the museum’s Mineral Gallery which was given a spectacular ‘glow up’ in 2024.

As well as aligning with the Curriculum, the new workshop also has its roots firmly in local history and regional identity; children will see for themselves just how unique Cornwall’s geology is, how mining has played such a big role in shaping the region, and why Cornwall’s mineral resources are still so relevant today.

The museum’s Mineral Gallery is home to many such specimens, and the collection is of global significance. Kate Clayton, Learning Manager at the museum, said:

“Getting to grips with this topic in such inspiring surroundings is a fantastic opportunity we’re proud to be able to offer local schools. The Mineral Gallery tells the story of 3,500 years of mining history, and sparkles with thousands of fascinating specimens discovered right under our feet here in Cornwall.”

The project was part funded by Cornwall Community Foundation through contributions from Cornish Lithium, and the workshop was trialled with St Austell and St Dennis Primary Schools. Cornish Lithium ESG Engagement Lead, Zoe Carter, said:

“At Cornish Lithium we’re passionate about supporting STEM opportunities that spark curiosity and build future skills. This workshop gives children a fantastic chance to explore the rocks and minerals that make Cornwall so unique, and we’re proud to play a part in helping them discover the science and the history beneath their feet.”

The workshop is called ‘Rocks Rock’ and is now available to all on a first-come-first-served basis, but spaces are limited and teachers are recommended to book as far in advance as possible.

The museum’s learning department offers several other workshops including a popular series on the ancient cultures of Egypt, Greece and Rome as well as local history topics on The Cornish Giant and the inventor Richard Trevithick.
